I am a writer.
Ever since I was a young girl, I have always been fascinated by writing. I was reading by age three, and ever since then, I have loved words. It is amazing to me how twenty-six letters can become stories and novels that make us laugh, cry, and believe in things we know don't exist in the "real" world. From the castles at Hogwarts to Willy Wonka's chocolate factory, writers give us things we can only imagine through the words they write.
When I was younger, I often wrote a lot of stories in my free time. I received a lot of support from my family, who helped me publish my first short story. I took intense writing classes over the summer and explored many different genres and ideas. I started a company in second grade with my friend that I credited all my books with. Since then, it hasn't made a profit, but it has pushed me to keep on writing. By elementary school, I knew writing was one of my biggest passions.
I have always had a changing perspective about writing. When I was little, I used to love Dr. Seuss. The colors and illustrations combined with the crazy rhymes told his imaginative stories in a way that could only be the work of a genius. In second grade, I grew to love Roald Dahl because of his wild characters and larger-than-life ideas. I especially liked Matilda, the story of a girl genius who had hidden talents. I aspired to be like Matilda and tried reading many of the higher-level books she enjoyed, but I never got far. In fifth grade, I found a love for poetry. Concrete, diamante, and haiku poems were all interesting to me. I also found an interest in screenwriting. I wrote a fifteen-page screenplay that tied for first place in a school-wide contest. Recently, I have taken up writing short stories. Because of their brevity, I find it easy to tell an good story in just a few pages. Over the years, I have tried to start many novels, but I have never got past the first few chapters.
Whenever I think of an idea, I immediately write it down so I don't forget it. When I have time after school or on the weekends, I sit down at my desk and brainstorm. Sometimes I draw out the setting or the characters to give me inspiration, and sometimes I sketch a quick storyboard of the events. But usually, I just start writing. When I start a story, I think of a way to catch the reader's attention, usually using dialogue or description. When I write for school, I feel more limited, as I have to follow the teacher's instructions and the grading rubric. When I write at home, I feel free to write anything I want. It is relaxing to know that I can just write.
When I found out I could take a class for writing, I immediately applied for Journalism and was overjoyed when I was accepted as a page editor. Journalism is the perfect class for me. It allows me to learn about time management, deadlines, cooperation, and working hard to create a something great. It also helps me develop myself as a writer every single day.
In the future, I hope to write many short stories, novels, and screenplays. However, I want to pursue a career that allows me to write in a social environment, rather than at the lonely desk of a full-time author. Journalism has allowed me to write in a cooperative and social environment, which I truly loved. I hope to find inspiration in everything I do so that I can write every day for the rest of my life.
